Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle in Cumbria

The promontory hillfort of Castle-Head is located about half a mile south-east of Lindale village - overlooking the Grange-over Sands Golf Course. Dating from the Iron-Age but occupied during the Roman period when it was a signal station and, later in the Dark-Age period by the British. A footpath gives access to the hillfort at the western side. Originally the hillfort of Castle Head was an island surrounded by the sea. [The site is on private land and permission may be needed to visit].

It has a single rampart at the northern side, whilst there are natural defenses at the west, south and eastern sides. The enclosure of the fort slopes away from south to north towards the rampart; beyond the rampart the ground falls away by 200 feet to ground level. The north-eastern side of the rampart was revetted with stone walling, some of which survives to a height of 4 feet. And beyond the western section of the rampart a triangular-shaped platform is visible.

During excavations at the fort Roman artefacts were found including coins, bones and beads. Some silver and iron artefacts were also found from both the Roman and Dark-Age periods.
