Motherby (Cumbria)
Motherby (Cumbria) submitted by Anne T : Standing just to the west of the line of stones, which seems to curve around to meet the stone wall just to the south of the well. We wondered if this line of stones had been constructed to control water flow. Couldn't get any nearer to the well on this side of the ground as it was very wet and spongy, presumably where the spring rises. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Motherby (Cumbria)
Motherby (Cumbria) submitted by Anne T : This peculiar line of stones runs from the bottom of the hill up towards the village, appearing to end in a building platform at the northern most end. An old medieval boundary? A lot of the stones are rounded and shaped with traces of the bank. Nothing on Pastscape or Historic England about this site. Curious. I'm trying to track down any references to what this might be. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Motherby (Cumbria)
Motherby (Cumbria) submitted by Anne T : Standing on the road just north of the well, looking over it towards the River Petteril which runs south west to north east across the fields. The water from the southern most trough appears to then drain into the river. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Motherby (Cumbria)
Motherby (Cumbria) submitted by Anne T : The water in the well is exceptionally clear, with a fair flow on it at the time of our visit. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Motherby (Cumbria)
Motherby (Cumbria) submitted by Anne T : The well chamber is some 10+ metres further along the wall towards Motherby village, with the well chamber directly underneath the wall. An iron gate on either side of the wall gives access to the well itself. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Motherby (Cumbria)
Motherby (Cumbria) submitted by Anne T : Parking in the layby just to the south of the well's grid location, a line of drinking troughs are the first feature to come into view. These bear a striking similarity to those on Newbeggin village green nearby.
