Callow Hill Camp
Callow Hill Camp submitted by TheWhiteRider : Part of the Southern Sector. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Callow Hill Camp is a small multivallate hill fort situated to the East of Minsterley. The site is quite impressive, in particular the Southern sector where three high banks are clearly visible, but is covered in trees and is bordered to the North and East by extensive quarrying - some of which has destroyed parts of the Eastern defences.

The best route to the site is via Poles Coppice Nature Reserve which provides a pleasant walk. Once the area around the quarrying is reached, however, the path narrows - was a quagmire in places - and becomes a little more awkward to traverse. There are warning signs regarding the quarrying and cctv surveillance everywhere.

There are some good views over Minsterley from parts of the fort, but much was obscured by the trees, even in April. There were quite a few people walking the site and some kids on bikes so it does seem a popular spot.

Some sources suggest that Callow Castle, the ruins of which were reportedly still visible in 1540, may have been built on the site, but there is certainly no visible evidence of this now and the castle's exact location remains a mystery.
