Burrow Hill Camp (Shropshire)
Burrow Hill Camp (Shropshire) submitted by harleygreyhound : A different view on the Burrow Hill Fort in the South Shropshire Hills (Vote or comment on this photo)
This hillfort is another Shropshire defended hilltop well worth a visit. two springs, three entrances, and four sets of ramparts and ditches around most of the circumference make for an engaging visit. It is wonderfully sited, with rewards for the long ascent - the fantastic views. The fort is shaped like a pear, or tear, around the natural contours of the hill, being narrower on the west side. To the north west side there is only one ditch, and two ramparts, as this is the steepest side of the hill.

The well defendable entrances are 1) on the south west side, at the point of the tear 2) a very complex entrance on the south east side, and 3) a prolonged entrance on the north east side gives a killing floor of some length. The raised interior is likely older than the surrounding massive ramparts, and can be discerned by a long curved earthwork running N-S, curving to the west. Hut platforms are numerous within this area.

The springs are in the south east entrance, and the near north east corner. The former is easily spotted, the latter was not found on the visit.

Access is allowed; follow the footpath signs from Aston on Clun, or from the south, and enter the fort from the NE through a gate with a latch.

Burrow Hill Camp (Shropshire) submitted by TheWhiteRider : Looking into Burrow Hill Camp from the SW entrance. Banks can be seen to either side and the central spur is dotted with oak trees. The abundance of oak trees on this site makes for a wonderful atmosphere without spoiling the integrity of the earthworks. (Vote or comment on this photo)
