Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria
Information about this well comes from the Cumbria Historic Environment Record, HER no. 223, where it is listed as a holy well. However, their description reads: "By tradition it is thought there was a chapel here, but no evidence supports this. There is a natural spring called Chapel Well."
"Chapel Well is at the foot of the hill in an area of marshy grass. It is a simple stone-lined rectangle c 1m on each side. The surrounding ground has been disturbed by cattle using the well as a trough. C 20m below the well there is a small brick-built structure marked on the maps as a 'hydraulic ram'. There were no earthworks or traces of other building remains to suggest a site for a chapel (Hopkins)."
The site of the well is recognised on the Historic England map search, but there is no entry for the well. The well is shown on the National Library of Scotland 1866 25-inch OS map [link shared under the terms of NLS's Creative Commons CC-BY licence], and there is indeed no sign of a chapel or church nearby.
Is this a holy well? Is anyone able to confirm whether this is true? If so, do you know what its waters were used for - baptism, healing and/or restorative purposes?
Has anyone visited this site? Do you have any photographs to add?
