Welshampton Bowl Barrow
Welshampton Bowl Barrow submitted by TimPrevett : The barrow adjoining the road in Welshampton; impressive stature - shame about the road cutting it in half, and the telegraph pole! A good view into the enclosure, and idea of the surrounding countryside is possible by standing on the bank above the pavement. Snowdrops were growing on the barrow today (Sat 15th Jan 2005); an encouraging sign of the life stirring in the ground again. See main e... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in Shropshire

The remains of a bowl barrow on the south side of the A495 in Welshampton village centre.

This sizeable mound, 60 feet in diameter, and near 9 feet high, is hard to miss. Many times we had gone past this feature enroute somewhere else, and at last a visit was planned and actioned.

Access is not possible due to barbed wire and chicken wire, though you can look right into the enclosure surrounding it by standing on a bank above the pavement. When standing on this bank the height of the location in relation to the surrounding countryside strikes you - this would have been visible for a good few miles around before houses made their mark on the landscape.

Subtle contours are detectable on the east side of the barrow, aiding its interpretation a bowl barrow.

We parked the car in the small area outside St Michael & All Angels Church, a little to the west. Be careful with the road and bends here - many vehicles come through too fast; a bit worrying especially with small children in tow.
