St Candida
St Candida submitted by captainjack : Shrine of St Candida (formerly known as St Wite). This was once a very important pilgrimage site, particularly for people seeking some sort of physical healing. The church is usually open between 10am and 4pm most days. Also visit St Wite's well, to the south of the A35, which is said to be good for curing eye complaints. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The 'A Church Near You' website for Whitchurch Canonicorum: St Candida & Holy Cross says: "Our church is over a 1000 years old and we are the only Parish Church in England to have a shrine with the relics of a Saint. She is St Wite and the church has been a centre of pilgrimage for centuries, as she is a healing Saint. All visitors are very welcome. The church is open for you to visit between 10 and 4 every day".

The church with its carved stones and shrine are scheduled as Historic England List ID 1227942 and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 449739. Pastscape adds: "Documentary evidence suggests the presence of a Saxon minster built circa 897 which became a Benedictine Cell … Built into the internal south wall at the East end of the South aisle, is a fragment with two circular panels with rosettes. These are probably late 11th century".

The Journal of Antiquities also features a page for St Candida’s Church, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset, which includes a photograph of the 13th century shrine of St Candida (aka Wite), and gives a list of reference sources for more information.
