Anne T saw from a distance on 28th May 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 1 Hallrigg Standing Stone, Plumpton: The nearest we could get was the very back (staff only area) of the Pot Place Car Park, and we asked permission to take this photograph from the member of staff working in this area. We did try numerous other ways to get closer to the standing stone, but couldn't even find a track and/or gate to walk across the fields, or who to ask permission off. Photo taken with a tripod and 50-300mm zoom lens at maximum zoom, but even this didn't give an excellent photo, given the haze in the atmosphere.

Beanie saw from a distance on 31st May 2017 - their rating: Cond: 4 Access: 1 Was able to see the stone from the train between Carlisle and Penrith, and just visible from the bus to Plumpton. The closest I could get was The Pot Place car park. Photographs were taken using a compact camera - anyone with a digiscope would do a lot better.

Hallrigg Standing Stone
Hallrigg Standing Stone submitted by nicoladidsbury : Hallrigg Standing Stone - rediscovered standing stone, 2 miles north of Lowhouse Standing Stone, 5 miles north of Penrith. It appears to be red sandstone, approx 1.5m tall (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Cumbria, near Plumpton Village. The first time I spotted this stone I was sat on the train. At first I couldn't believe my eyes, but several train journeys later, plus a couple of motorway journeys, confirmed its existence. It is not marked on the OS maps, and I have not been able to find any reference on the internet.

I have called it Hallrigg standing stone as that is the nearest farm on the west side of the Petrill river, though in modern times the farm is separated from the stone by the M6 motorway and the West Coast main line railway line.
Access to the stone is virtually impossible, as it lies on private land, with no nearby roads.
It is due west of Long Meg, which lies 5 miles to the east as the crow flies.
It is 2 miles NNW of Lowhouse Standing stone (also know as Holme Head Standing Stone), and stands on the West bank of the Petrill, similar to Lowhouse.
It appears to be red sandstone, approx 1.5M tall.
It seems important to note the similarity to Lowhouse, though it is much smaller. Do these stones mark a route north, following the banks of the Petrill?

Hallrigg Standing Stone
Hallrigg Standing Stone submitted by Anne T : This is the nearest we could get to this standing stone - from right at the very back (staff only area, with permission) of the Pot Place car park, and across the railway line from the stone (as close as we could get to the line). Photo taken with tripod and 50-300mm zoom lens at maximum zoom and manual focus, but still not a good shot, as there was a haze in the atmosphere. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Fitz, David and Baz - sorry its taken me so long to reply! I've just seen that Andys added really useful links to "your own page" and I'm able to see that people have commented, erm,..... 10 months late!
Do you think it may be possible that there was a northern route marked by these stones, possilby following the Petrill?

Excellent Nicola, another north Cumbrian stone.
A few years back Stu and I went looking for a stone about half way between this one and Holme House and found nothing. I wonder if this is the one we were looking for.
There's a record of your stone here

Thanks Nicola!

The number of times I've driven along the M6, caught a fleeting glimpse of the stone, and thought 'Was that a...?' :-D

Now I know!
