Poulton Timber Circle submitted by blingo : Placing of posts (Vote or comment on this photo)
Photos of the Timber Circle Reconstruction Project in Cheshire. [Unfortunately the site was mis-identified as a timber circle and is in fact a roundhouse - see note below in the comments section] Blingo writes (2007): For the last few months I’ve been involved with the reconstruction of a Bronze Age timber circle, situated on the border of Cheshire and Wales just south of Chester, at a site known as ‘The Poulton Research Project’.

I have been compiling a photographic diary of the various stages of construction, which will be a first for timber circles in Great Britain. There has been another reconstructed in County Meath, Ireland, but no photo diary of the construction (to my knowledge). With the help of Shane Callaghan, (and the permission off Mike Emery and Alan Wilmshurst) I have also recorded it on video. This has been turned into a ‘Time-lapse’ version currently running at 3 minutes long. There is a final stage to be recorded which hopefully will be very soon. The time conversion is in relation of 5 minutes recording to 1 second play back

The process of construction was started with the placement of canes to indicate where the post holes were since the original excavation had been backfilled. From this turf holes were dug to indicate where and how wide the holes should be dug. Everyone involved with Poulton took part in the digging and after a few hours the holes were ready. Next a shallow henge was created to enclose the circle. We then covered the inner area with straw and bracken. This was then burned to bake the post holes and to cleanse the site. The baking process turned the clay solid like an ancient kind of concrete! The post holes where still smoking 2 days later as shown on the pics. The posts were then erected and (I feel) the site was reborn 3 and a half – 4 thousand years later. The Winter Solstice came a couple of weeks after the posts were in place and was one of the best I’ve experienced in quite a few years. We’re currently waiting for stone to arrive to finish off the timber circle, and finish the time-lapse.

We have also been experimenting with different kinds of photography on the site including 3d, infra-red and (my favourite) night photography involving long exposures and fire-balls!

There has been geo-phys which indicates a larger ring ditch but will have to wait and see what develops as other projects are in the pipe line. Infact the team are going to reconstruct a roundhouse soon which was donated from Liverpool’s 'Museum of Life'. Hopefully I’ll be able to time-lapse that as well. The whole process with the recording, editing and working out time speeds has been a lengthy one, but has been well worth it.

The time-lapse video will be made available through the Poulton Henge official website, which has more detailed information on the archaeology regarding the timber circle, the reconstruction [archive links] and other Poulton projects [current link].

Poulton was featured recently on ‘Time Team’ (1.5.07) and can be seen on ‘4od’ (channel4.com). This programme didn’t have the timber circle on it, but there is a clip on YouTube, see it below for a copy.

NOTE: that the reconstruction is on Private land and access to the site is via appointment.

Poulton Henge - the timber circle that never was! by Andy B on Tuesday, 19 December 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
I got a very interesting response when I emailed to see why the timber circle is no longer mentioned on the Poulton Research Project web pages:

Dear Andy,
C has forwarded me your e-mail as Consultant archaeologist at the Poulton Research Project. Can you please remove your listing for a timber circle on the Megalithic Portal. It was actually an Iron Age roundhouse and was misinterpreted by the previous consultant.
Yours sincerely,
KC

Well this is interesting - just as well I checked! So we can either delete the site totally or make this into a little tale of when archaeologists don’t always get things right - I wonder if they told the archaeology volunteers (photos above) who laboured to reconstruct a timber circle which didn’t exist?!

google earth unfortunately has a poor resolution south of the a55 where the a483 (to Wrexham) joins.Whether or not this has anything to do with the Duke of Westminsters land i couldn't say. On the other hand, 'multimap' has a better resolution. The Poulton project is in the location of the 'site of chapel' which is marked on most maps. Access is possible through the website or by contacting 'c.caroe@btinternet.com'

Im not Anonymous, Im mmike but cannot log somehow..Any ancient site recovered is something to aim for I agree, but I wonder why groups like English Heritage dont want to get involved.I found the Shepherds Race Maze some years ago near Northampton and offered to work with them to recover it again for the nation, and its sorry, NO MONEY...Had better luck with some people who lived close to the Rollright Stones when I found a sacred site on their land at Whichford. They never kicked me out but worked with me to restore the site to how it once was and built a wonderful stone circle at that special place. It contains energies that pass through the Rollrights, that come in from Brittany,France and beyond going south.Okay energies is a dirty work with some here, but its what the ancient sites are ALL built on, find those and you find the ancient site.True the circle of stones or huge single standing stone may have long gone, but the energies remain and show where this special place once existed friend.Pity that some people cannot see the wood from the trees, ancient sites abound, if you know where to look.I wish you well with what you do, I shall Google Poulton, to look for any sacred site near friend, THAT would be the place for the Temple....mmike...Other post went missing, so sent this one afterwards.

This place was lost to many years of farming but now stands proud in a field that is still farmed but has not been ploughed in years. Infact a big thanks to the farmer for allowing this project to happen. I have mentioned that there's more work to be done in the whole field and ajoining fields, and work on the 'chapel' has been going on for about 10 years now, and is continuing.
quote-'These sacred places are in the country side all around, and would benefit from having the site return to what it once was'..... well it has returned to where it was. The team at Poulton have alot of projects ahead and are discovering more each time they scan the field with different techniques. The latest being a ground penetrating radar from Liverpool university. The site also has archaeological courses during the summer, which (i have said) you can find more on their website.

I agree any work is better than none at all, but I am lost to know why ancient sites of historic value like the Shepherds Race Maze near Northampton was never recovered by English Heritage and their like. Its sitting in the fields growing oil seed rape when I last visited, and this is just one example of past ancient sites being lost.In the past Ive found sacred sites where friendly farmers have understood the need to return the place to how it once was, and built a stone circle on the site at Whichford near the Rollright Stones. This site includes energies that pass through the Rollrights, and might even come in from France and Brittany,as they run in from that direction. So much that cannot be seen today is ignored, thats why I say our historic past might be sitting right in front of you, and you JUST would not know apart from the tell tale influence of the remaining energies.Okay energies is a dirty word with some folks, but its the VERY reason for the historic place in the first instance, ancient man found these and marked the places out as special. And so they are still today, okay the circle of stones could have been removed along with any huge single standing stones, but the energies remain to tell the story of their past friend.Find these places and you have the ancient site to rebuild, and something to leave future generations to marvel at,to that end I work...I will Google your site to look for these such places, a light standing bright in the night sky friend....mmike, cannot log on sorry.

Im sure the motives for building this henge were the best, but dont you think the time and effort would have been put to better use to build the site on sacred ground like the Norfolk Sea Henge. These sacred places are in the country side all around, and would benefit from having the site return to what it once was, be that stone circle or wooden henge. Most time the land owners would agree these places be turned into a past ancient site of worship, given they understand the heritage of the place as it once was. Many of the circle of trees you see in the country side remain past sacred sites lost in the mists of time, yet even today containing strong energy of the planet, why leave those places to be ploughed over and lost.

That video is quite something! I wouldn't be suprised to find it crop up in a trance music video at some point. To tie our two video stories together - has anyone ever been to one of Peter Knight's DJ performances (for want of a better word)?
