St. Catherine's Well (Swell) submitted by HOLYWELL : St Catherine's Well Swell, enveloped in undergrowth (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Somerset. This delightful wayside well was apparently rediscovered in the 1980s by two local people. It is recorded by both antiquarian Horne and Tongue but thought lost.

The former records:
" A well named after St Catherine, patroness of the little church, is said to have existed here."
The latter records that it was:
" .. a wishing well. You must go around it three times at sunrise, but if you crawled around it counter clockwise it brought an ill wish."
The well consists of a small stone chamber set into the bank of a triangle of ground and is pleasingly restful.
