Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Somerset

Skipperhams Well lies on private land at the edge of a field. We were shown the well by it’s very proud owner and found that it consists of a stone basin which is stained by the iron rich water that bubbles up into it and drains away into an adjacent wood.

Skipperhams Well
Skipperhams Well submitted by KiwiBetsy : In past times the water was used as a cure for scrofula and digestive complaints. It was popular to drink it on the first three Sundays in May when it’s curative properties were thought to be at their peak. It was also thought that the ebbing and flowing of the water was able to predict national disasters. (Vote or comment on this photo)
