Ancient Cross in Monmouthshire (Sir Fynwy)
Grosmont Churchyard Cross in Monmouthshire. In the churchyard of St Nicholas' church stands an early Medieval preaching cross, dating probably from the 11th/12th century CE. The top section or fragment has a carving of Mary holding baby Jesus, with some other decoration around that - and what might be a bovine animal just below that.
The lower part - the shaft or socket stone is more recent in date, perhaps late Medieval. The shaft stands upon an octagonal base. It seems likely that this was once a preaching cross to where the local people would congregate and be converted.
A local legend claims that the giant, Jack o' Kent was buried beneath the cross sometime in the 14th-15th century. He lived at Kentchester nearby. He is credited with throwing Harold's Stones from Beacon Hill to where they now stand, and also jumping from the Sugar Loaf mountain to the Skirrid Fawr (Holy Mountain) near Grosmont.
This site is also recorded as Coflein NPRN 306507, which contains basic details: "A socket stone with a fragment of cross-shaft in Grosmont churchyard".
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for this site - see their page for Churchyard Cross, St Nicholas’ Church, Grosmont, Monmouthshire, Wales, which includes drawings of the cross and the carved cross head, together with a description and directions for finding this site. The Journal also includes quotations from several sources of information, together with a list of reference material and other related websites. The Journal adds: "Today, however, the churchyard cross looks rather forlorn with its chopped down shaft, but it still stands here on its octagonal base – alas though without the carved cross-head. But ‘this’ carved section is safe and secure in the south transept of St Nicholas’ church after it was stolen some years back".
