Anne T visited on 11th Jul 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Access: 4 St Michael's Churchyard Cross plus Motte and Bailey: This is the church my son and DIL should have been married in over a year ago, but thanks to Covid, then urgent roof replacement works, the wedding was moved to Aymestrey. Lovely church (from what we could see of it behind the scaffolding, almost Minster sized), but the cross took a little bit of spotting, as at first glance it looked just like a sundial (to be viewed from the back of a horse).
A gate from the near the entrance to the churchyard leads off onto a pleasant walk towards the motte and bailey site. As we enjoyed our walk, the rain started to pelt down, so we retreated back to the car. Nice site, and a lot to see.
The large, almost Minster-like, church of St Michael was first built in the 13th century, although only a few fragments of the original structure remain. The church was having its roof replaced at the time of our visit, so it was not possible to go inside, but our primary purpose was to see the churchyard cross, 15 metres south of the south, and the adjacent "Kingsland Castle".
The cross is recorded as HE List ID 1081836, and as Historic England Research Record Monument 108528. It has an octagonal socket stone with a slim, octagonal shaft rising from it which stands around 1.5m tall. On top of the shaft is the remains of a sundial with a broken gnomen. The cross stands on the south side of the church, near the south porch, which has some old and interesting carving on the wooden frame.
The adjacent Kingsland Castle (the remains of an extensive motte and bailey castle) can be reached from a footpath near the main gate into the church. The motte and part of the earthworks lie partly on private land, but can easily be seen. The motte is recorded as Historic England List ID 1007318 and as Historic England Research Record Monument No 108522.
