It is an oval arrangement of approximately 81 fallen stones with an external diameter of 20m by 17m. The stones are closely spaced except on the western side where large gaps suggest many others may have been removed; scheduled."

We haven't visited this stone circle, but have been walking nearby. The countryside behind Howtown is absolutely stunning, with great views over Ullswater to the west. Definitely recommended for an afternoon out, especially with a stop-off at the Howtown Hotel, which is a really unique, old-fashioned hotel. It's even possible to get the ferry to Pooley Bridge from the landing stage nearby. Glorious on a sunny afternoon.

Interesting to note that the OS 1:50000 map shows a stone circle at approx. NY457194, yet on the 1:25000 map it appears at approx. NY457191.

I cannot identify anything from the available satellite images to determine where to position the site on our page so have put it to NY4571 1908 (from the old Defra map) until we have better data.

Hi, TheCaptain - good guess, as it turns out to be the same as the officially recorded NGR! (See the Pastscape link above). Well done.
