St Anne's Well (St Helens)
St Anne's Well (St Helens) submitted by LivingRocks : The well is severely threatened by the plough. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Merseyside. St Anne’s Well is described by English Heritage as a well preserved example of a medieval holy well of the type with a shallow square basin and steps leading down to the bottom. Unfortunately farming activities seem to be doing considerable damage to the fabric of this well, ploughing is going on right up to the edge of the well and at least one of the surrounding blocks is now dislodged and sitting in the basin which is very silted up, the steps described in the 2000 EH report are no longer visible. This site needs attention if it is not to become yet another statistic in the list of lost holy wells. Magicmap Reference

Re: St Anne's Well (St Helens) by Anonymous on Thursday, 14 September 2023
I visited 14/09/23 (crops cut & gone). Water surface covered in duckweed and edge areas overgrown. Wooden side supports/gaurd rails installed in 2016 broken & collapsed. Certainly not in condition as excavated 2016 by English Heritage. Will be lost again in a couple of years.

Re: St Anne's Well (St Helens) by Anonymous on Wednesday, 11 November 2009
The person writing this dribble should get their facts right before making numerous unfounded statements. Farming activities have not damaged the fabric of the well; it is the local yobs that have done the damage. The farming activities have help protect the well as if “developers” had got their hands on the land for building, no doubt the well would have been destroyed. The basin of the well is not silted up as the water supply to the well was damaged by the mining activity from Lea Green Colliery years ago. The well has intentionally been filled with soil to protect it from further damage by the local yobs. Why do uninformed people jump to the conclusion that farmers have no concern for what is on their land when in fact they are custodians of a lot of the history and nature of this country. If farmers had no interest in historic sites such as St Anne’s Well they would all have been removed years ago and lost forever. One final point is how did the author get pictures of the well as it is in the middle of private farmland and the nearest public right of way is too far away from the well to be able to take the two photographs? There seems to be a lack of respect for private property!

I visited the well Dec '12 for the first time since I was a child.
The ploughing is not as close to it now as in the above pictures, maybe due to the fact that the condition was brought up in a St Hellens counsil meeting?

It was totally over grown so there was no way of seeing the actual condition unfortunately, or wether the plants roots are doing any further damaging.
It certainly is not being looked after more than just not ploughing over the top of it.
If some effort was made to make this wonderful feature more than just some whole in a field it could boost the local economy a little by bringing visitors.......just a thought ;)

The Well is quite easy to reach following the little stream along the edge of the farmers field after crossing the railway bridge and following the steps leading down to the field. It is situated just a stones throw from the very edge of the feild, so visiting while there is no crops growing shouldn't pose much of a threat to the farmer. Again it would be nice to have it fenced off with a path way and maybe a few seats......it could be so beautiful (and fruitful)

Thank you for clearing up some misconceptions about who else is causing the damage!

    Jode
