The steps and shaft of this cross are relatively modern, erected sometime between 1838 to 1844. The head of the cross is much weathered and appears older than the rest of the cross, although neither Pastscape nor Historic England mention this.
The cross is less than 150m to the west of the church and the River Eden. At the church, there is the remains of an Anglo Saxon cross shaft.
This village cross is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 11518 and Historic England List ID 1323117.
Historic England tells us "this is not a market cross as Wetheral was not a market town". What is known is that the cross replaced a maypole on the village green in around 1838 to 1844, after the Enclosure Act of 1808. The shaft was placed on steps which were made in 1814.
Whilst the steps and shaft of the cross are relatively modern, the head of the cross is significantly more weathered than the rest of the structure. Pastscape tells us this cross "(may) possibly (be erected) on the site of a Medieval cross", although they add that there are 'no incorporated medieval remains'.
The cross sits high above the road at the south eastern end of the village green. Whilst parking is not allowed on the B6263 (Steele's Bank), parking is available along the side of the Green to the east of the cross. From the mid-point to the northern end of the village green, the slope onto the green is far less, allowing easy access to walk south towards the cross.
The cross is less than 150m uphill (west) from the church and the River Eden.
