Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria
Information about this possibly 'now destroyed' well comes from the Cumbria Historic Environment Record, HER no. 504. The HER record tells us: "Cardinal Well on the bank of the river Irthing near Newby, (is) listed as a holy well. Formerly a spring, but now dry. No structure associated with it."
"There is no public access to the site as shown. The riverbank is heavily overgrown and attempts to reach the site from there also proved futile. The river has heavily eroded the bank and the well may now have totally disappeared. It is shown on current OS maps as 'site of' very near to a line of electricity pylons". The symbol shown on current mapping indicates it is an ancient site
Typing in the grid reference given above, the location of the well comes up on the Historic England map search, although there is no listing for it, or any entry on the Historic England Research Records. The well is mentioned in the Old Cumbria Gazetteer - see their entry for Cardinal Well, Newby East, although they date the well to only the 19th century. .
Does anyone have any information about this well, and confirm whether or not it has holy associations? If so, what was the water used for - baptisms, healing and/or restorative powers?
If anyone has visited (or tried to visit) this site, and can confirm whether it still exists or not, please leave a comment on this site page. Thank you.
