Holy Well (Swainshill)

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Herefordshire

An interesting site located in the weir gardens owned by the National Trust. Legend has it that it was a Roman bath, indeed remains of a villa are nearby but its shape makes it unlikely, a possible water shrine perhaps. The present structure is probably Victorian.
A local legend states of a romance between an ancient Briton women and a Roman soldier. His general had sent him on a mission to speak to another women at the well on his behalf. His lover saw them together and thinking the worst, threw herself in the river. He jumped in after to save her but was also drowned. They are both said to haunt the well. Despite this the water was said to have love making virtues. It is easily found in the gardens.

Holy Well (Swainshill)
Holy Well (Swainshill) submitted by jfarrar : The southern buttress of the villa. It is much more eroded away than the northern one. The water shrine lays about 50 yards to the south of these buttresses. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Holy Well (Swainshill)
Holy Well (Swainshill) submitted by jfarrar : The northern buttress of a Roman villa. The Romano-British town of Kenchester (Magna) is about ½mile to the north and a Roman road lies a short distance to the west. Roman building materials, including dressed stone (many of which still lay on the bed of the river), mosaic tesserae, and painted wall plaster have been found here suggesting a high status building.
