Stretton Sheela
Stretton Sheela submitted by TheCaptain : Stretton Sheela, as she is fondly known, has been a victim of puritanism. A small stone has been placed in the space depicting her private parts, in an effort to make the figure a little less crude. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Above the old Norman doorway on the north side of the church at Church Stretton is a much older carved Sheela-na-gig stone, presumably from an earlier time and built into the church.

The Sheela is quite weathered, and is dissimilar from the surrounding stones but is similar to the red sandstone which incorporated from an earlier Norman chapel. Just below the carving is another small carving of a flower which appears to be of the same stone. This would seem to indicate that this was not it’s original position and might have been taken from an earlier structure.

Stretton Sheela, as she is fondly known, has been a victim of puritanism. A small stone has been placed in the space depicting her private parts, in an effort to make the figure a little less crude.

As is often the case with these things, it is above the door, clear for all to see, but away from easily being damaged.
