Pontesford Hill
Pontesford Hill submitted by TimPrevett : Find a hill in Shropshire, and it likely has a hillfort upon it! In this picture are two hillforts - Earl's Hill Camp (a rampart can be seen upon the right hand side of the top hill), and Pontesford Hill hillfort, covered by trees now. Taken on the move on the A488 looking south. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pontesford Hill Camp Hillfort is actually very low down and hidden in the trees of this prominent hill in Shropshire. Wooden steps from the car park lead directly up to a small multivallate hillfort, which is situated on a lower northern spur of Pontesford Hill.
Alternately, an easier path circles around from the car park's disabled parking spaces.
To the south of the hillfort the surrounding ground rises very steeply towards Earl's Hill Camp. The original access to the interior of the hillfort was constructed at this point.
There are ramparts visible, separated by a ditch which has
been largely infilled, but the ditch is still present as a terrace or as a shallow depression and can be walked on the west side.
There have been excavations in the past; a trench was dug through the middle rampart. Post holes were found along the top of the rampart, which marked the position of a palisade or fence. The excavation also revealed a complex sequence of occupation, which pre-dated the hillfort, including flint artefacts, most notably an early Neolithic scraper.

Pontesford Hill is the lower tree covered hill of those in the photograph. Earls hill is the higher open hill with Triangulation Station and far reaching views to the Berwyns, Brieddens and beyond.

Folklore here suggests there is a magical golden arrow to be found upon the hill, bringing luck to the finder. This perhaps once belonged to a warrior king, or a fairy, and can only be found on Palm Sunday. It used to be a tradition, that on Palm Sunday, families would have fun and picnics upon the hill to heighten the chance of the arrow being found. The day of fun got a bit too raucous over the years, and so the decent folk ceased attending, and eventually the tradition disappeared by the end of the Nineteenth Century.
