I hope you are all not overlooking another potential solution - looking at old maps of the area there seem to be a profusion of Boundary Stones and Markers in the near vicinity - I can understand our forebears going to the expense and trouble of erecting such stones - but I cannot see that sort of exercise being undertaken by a modern day hill farmer just for scratching posts -

Hopefully they are not 'discards' from an old quarry - unlikely in view of the fact no potential quarry seems to be that close (on studying those same old maps)

Thanks, haven't found the old maps yet.
Can only say as I percieve on walking by, and that it is some marker stone, that became a gate/scratch post.
I think it's limestone, and there is plenty around.
It surely cannot be a 'discard' since it is so well set in the ground.

Have a reply from Tony Riden from info@arnsidesilverdaleaonb.org.uk. He thanked me for the query and photo I emailed. It is not a stone he was aware of, but does know of several similiar stones located in fields around, that he understands to be scratching posts for livestock. He is passing the query on to the land owner Dallam Tower Estates and a local history group 'Mourholme Society'. He also mentions he is going to pass this onto the editor of Keer to Kent, the AONB journal of the Landscape Trust, to see if my question may be featured in the journal. Now it seems likely it is a scratching post, I'm going to feel quite daft about that.

Don't feel daft, it looks very plausible as an ancient stone, good one for reporting it. Utimately it can be difficult to know without excavation, unless there's a farmer or someone out there who remembers putting it there.

Thanks for posting this WindC. Bob Jenkins on Geograph thinks this is an old gatepost (see above)

It is near walls, but it doesn't have any remains to them. It is very smooth on top, maybe it has been used by cows for rubbing. I don't think it is a gatepost. Looking at Bob Jenkins grid reference placing, Makes me a field away in mine. I have emailed a photo to info@arnside-online.co.uk. Informing them I've classified it as a standing stone, as I believe it is. I also pointed out the footpath sign post on the ground close by, and hoped it was not planned that it should be fixed to this stone. I also hope I am not in trouble.
