Henge in Shropshire

Crop marks show the only possible henge so far known within Shropshire. Measuring near 200 feet in diameter, 3 entrances can be detected across what would have been a wide ditch.

A little way north (300 feet or so) is a double line of five smaller crop marks, likely forming a timber avenue aligning with the henge.

Other crop marks in the area show smaller circular features - believed to be ploughed out round barrows.

The evidence, therefore, is strongly indicative of a henge monument when considering the landscape around other henges, such as Stonehenge, Avebury, or the also destroyed Mount Pleasant henge near Dorchester.

Please note the grid reference SO442858 is approximate.

It is destroyed and visible as cropmark on aerial views. Try for example the aerial views on google map or bing. Links on the site page (blue buttons with aeroplane symbol).

Strefford is a variant of streetford, stretford, stratford (etc etc) and is the anglo-saxon variant name for where a Roman Road crosses a river - ie, a ford. The Dover - Holyhead arterial Roman Road of Watling Street crosses a river here just north of Craven Arms, south of Church Stretton.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Tim
