Les Trois Fontaine Noyal-Pontivy
Les Trois Fontaine Noyal-Pontivy submitted by JohnGinny : Site in Bretagne:Morbihan (56) France Les Trois Fontaines Noyal Pontivy. An atmospheric and peaceful site, set a long way from any busy roads but with good access for a car. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A beautiful wooded location where three wells in a stone enclosure sit peacefully. Two of the wells share the same structure with stone basins for water and niches for the statues of saints. There is a smaller well that is less ornate in structure also feeding into the outflow that leads down to the lavoir (community washing well).

The myth surrounding the creation of these wells is bloody!

Noyale was an 6th century Celtic Christian from the British Isles. She was a devout and beautiful young woman, who resisted the attentions of a native Breton lord Nizan.
He beheaded her with his sword. She picked up her head and started to walk. The first time she stopped to pray she stuck her staff into the earth, where it became a tree. Three drops of blood from her severed head fell upon the grass, and three fountains immediately sprang up.
Another version of the frequent occurring Breton beheading myth.

Much obliged Captain. I think the others are in the wrong place too. I don't think Finistere is near Paris. Cheers.

I have shifted several of these Brittany wells recently, as best as I could using geoportail. If you spot any others in the wrong place, please leave a comment on that sitepage, and I'll try and sort it.
