Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria

Listed in Jim Taylor Page's gazetteer within his "Cumbrian Holy Wells" publication of 1990 (page 27), this sulphurous well is still marked on modern OS maps. Whilst Taylor Page classifies this as a holy well, he appears to assign it a date of 1723, and queries whether or not it is a domestic water supply, so some more research to be done on this well.

The well is located on the south side of the Rae Burn, The minor road leading to this well was sign-posted as being closed for 7 weeks from 15th August 2022. We drove down as far as we could go, ending up at the bridge across the burn, which was completely closed off for repairs. Not even pedestrian access was possible.

Another well to revisit at a future date. In the meantime, if anyone has any information about this well, especially if it can help confirm the classification of this well as a holy well, I'd be grateful to hear. Please leave a comment here - thank you!
