Bromfield Barrows
Bromfield Barrows submitted by TimPrevett : Access is easy to all the sites, though if there is ever a time when golfers do not play, it may be best to visit then, and when the undergrowth is low. When visiting the more southerly sites, take care, as the B4365 road is straight for someway, and traffic is fast. Also, rabbit holes make for considerable tripping hazards! A Barrow Cemetery of five round barrows in Shropshire The site at Bromfield is an immensely important archaeological location. Once there were in excess of twenty barrows, and three flat cremation cemetaries, dating from 2000 to 900 years BC. Now only three barrows survive as anything of note. Access is easy to all the sites, though if there is ever a time when golfers do not play, it may be best to visit then, and when the undergrowth is low. When visiting the more southerly sites, take care, as the B4365 road is straight for someway, and traffic is fast. Also, rabbit holes make for considerable tripping hazards! The northernmost survivor - (another) Robin Hood's Butt Barrow is at SO489778. This is over 12 feet high, and over 90 in diameter. Parking can be had very nearby on a wide field entrance. A few paces from adjoining the north end Ludlow Golf Course, it is beneath the towering trees and smothering undergrowth. Excavation here in 1884 revealed the cremation of a boy some 9 feet down, along with bronze implements (not specified exactly what in my source). The barrow just east of the B4365 is easy to access, at SO496773. Excavation in 1884 showed a burnt bone cremation in a cist, and another cremation in an urn. This urn is now on display in Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in the "Under our Feet" gallery. The third remaining barrow is at SO497770; though having been ploughed out to a degree, the mound is still some 150 feet in diameter, and 6 feet approx high.

There were far too many golfers about for me to attempt to get close to any of the other barrows at this site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
