Stone Circle in Cheshire

The Victoria County History records a site ‘with a circular setting of stone’ in Delamere close to Eddisbury hillfort. In 1937 a possible cist and cremation came to light during ploughing leading to an excavation which revealed a circle of stones 7ft in diameter. It is possible that the site may originally have been covered by a mound, as at Church Lawton III, but any traces could have been removed by ploughing. This is further supported by earlier sources which report that several cartloads of stone and two barrow loads of ‘soot’ were removed from the site.

Excavations uncovered three pits outside the stone circle containing the cremated remains of an infant and an inverted urn, which proved to be a Collared urn containing a small fragment of bronze.

Access

The site of the stone circle is located just off a small lane, known as Morreys Lane, to the north of the A54(T) Northwich to Chester Road. If anything remains it is currently on private land belonging to a local nursery.

Looks like any possible trace of this circle is gone; was going to call in this afternoon, but having just previewed it on Flash Earth
http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.21403&lon=-2.695881&z=19.1&r=0&src=msl
just looks like a load of plant growing / storage areas... will have a brief look as I go past to see if a further peep is worth it.

And some people believe that often those Roman roads were built on the lines of pre-existing prehistoric trackways (not exactly perhaps as the ancient Britons probably didn't got to the same lengths of getting them straight as the Romans did). This would make even more sense if sites such as henges and stone circles were being used as meeting and trading places for people coming from some distance. Roman roads lie very close to Arbor Low, The Bull Ring and even Staden in Derbyshire and interestingly the axes of the entrances of these henges mirror almost exactly the lines of those roads.

Looking at the location of it on the map, places it just off a Roman Road, and one thing I have increasingly noticed, is that Romans often placed their roads along existing notable landmarks. I believe this further validates the case for something having been here of pre-Roman significance.
