Natural Feature in Herefordshire. A probable natural feature in the form of a defile or gully running north to south from the Aubrey Street area, across King Street, east of Bridge Street and into the Wye below the Wye Bridge. Alfred Watkins, whose 1920 paper was the first to draw attention to this feature, observed black mud in building work on the east side of Aubrey Street, but saw no sign of it further north at the rear of the Green Dragon Hotel.

The Aubrey Street sewer repair was located entirely within a much larger feature, 4.5m deep, width unknown, with middle Bronze Age C14 dates from peat at the bottom and mid/late 12thC pottery from the top.

Dig for Bronze Age King's Ditch in Herefordshire by Andy B on Wednesday, 31 March 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
Archaeologists have begun excavating a site in Herefordshire, which they believe may reveal a 3,000-year-old earth trench called the King's Ditch.

The Border Archaeology firm is digging in the former Kemble car park in Aubrey Street, Hereford, near the cathedral.

It said the ditch was an important Bronze Age site that could yield historical treasures and it expected to find it about 4m (13ft) underground.

The site is currently earmarked to be developed for social housing.
