Ancient Cross in Somerset

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this cross - now a modern replacement - see their entry for Market Cross, Glastonbury, Somerset. TNA tells us that the present cross was erected in 1846 to replace the cross and its surrounding structures, that had stood for many centuries before. TNA quote from a 1799 source: "In my way to the Abbey, I passed the Market Cross, and old polygonal structure, its apex crowned with a little naked figure, bearing strong marks, in its position and employment of that grossness of taste, in which the sculptors of the 15th century so frequently indulged."

Pastscape Monument No. 193860 also records the cross, an extract from their entry reads: "A modern market cross, erected 1846, now stands on the site of the former market cross which was built of stone, on an octagonal plan, having clustered pillars ranged round a central column supporting its roof. Adjoining the cross with an ancient conduit with a vaulted roof. Both structures were demolished in 1808. The cross is mentioned by Leland who visited Glastonbury about the middle of the 16th c. 18th c. prints confirm that the modern cross is on the site of the earlier market cross."
