Felton Hill Long Barrow T26 submitted by 4clydesdale7 : This seems too small for a Long Barrow (Vote or comment on this photo)
Felton Common is a large open space on land fairly high up just to the east of Bristol airport with lots of odd stones, mounds and other features. At the southwestern corner are the remains of an oval barrow, which has several stones protruding from its northern end, which may be the remains of what was once a chamber.

E K Tratman of the University of Bristol Spelaeological Society proudly proclaimed in his 1925 Paper published in the Society's proceedings 1926 Vol 2 p 278/9 that 'in the future this barrow will be called the Felton Hill Long Barrow' - this was prior to the birth of English Heritage and its progeny the pastscape website which states quite categorically this is not a long barrow but a bowl barrow or possibly a windmill mound - there is an extant converted windmill but 200m to the west of this mound - so perhaps there has been poor map reading - both lie beneath a Bristol Airport fly path -

To give some credit to EH, today the barrow looks more like a bowl barrow and local folklore suggests that this and the two barrows (T28 & T29) (to the east) were at one time called 'The Mountains' and regarded as a threesome - there is also in the area a Barrow Cemetery at Redhill just to the West - somewhere between T26 T28 & T29 lies the elusive Suck Stone

Unlike its two 'sisters' this Barrow does not have a ditch (unlike most Long Barrows) - Tratman stated the Barrow's measurements were 58' Long 46'/40' Wide (tapering) and 4' High - but these measurements do not adhere today - the stones within the Barrow are more likely to have been dumped there as part of medieval quarrying/field clearance - so no doubt the debate will continue

The suck stone. Any idea what it is supposed to be like? I am sure I found a stone of some kind in the right area on my first exploration of this common back in 2004. But wasn't expecting anything ancient, so left it alone!

According to Tratman Vol 2(3) Proceedings UBSS 1926 p277 it is a large flat stone formed of the local Limestone with water standing in an hollow on its upper surface - then he got bolder - saying - nearby lie a number of large stones (not all of) which may lie in a circle; he gave a position 51/22/46N - 02/41/30W which I have drawn on my old Pathfinder Map - it seems to be the same position he shows in his hand drawn map of the area also on p277

hard to tell from your pictures, but it seems to me you are describing what I know as the "oval barrow" of which I have put a site page and several pictures on here - or so I thought.

But maybe this area is somewhere I never did get round to finishing off sorting out, as my pictures are collected together with the other sitepage, and the barrow down in the valley is not here at all !

See Defra Oval Barrow

If this is the case, its had a damned good clear up since I was last there a few years ago.

When last at the site I was only looking for one barrow close to the round house - but there were several mounds nearby - I posted my site because I thought our respective photographs had remarkable differences - I thought you were describing and showing the 'Chambered Cairn' discarded by Tratman as another of his mere 'mounds' - I did not know of the 'Oval Barrow' until you pointed it out - I think T30A (just posted) is better described as Oval but it is 600x to the east - food for thought -
