Stone Avenue associated with stone circle in Aberdeenshire.

There might be something funny going on with this site: according to RCAHMS most of the site was removed in the early 1800's leaving only two standing stones. Yet what is now visible is two stone rows. From the RCAHMS information the higher up pair is the original with the lower ones presumably a farmer's folly!
The original pair stand over six feet high and may be the remnants of a recumbent stone circle. This is an uncertain site according to Burl.

Druidsfield submitted by SolarMegalith : The OS map mentions it as remains of a stone circle, however large size of the stones suggests rather a typical pair of standing stones. (photo taken on September 2008)

When I visited this site on 15th August 2010, I spoke to the farmer, - a very pleasant friendly chap, - who explained that the two "fake" stones were unearthed when digging the foundations of the large modern byre and set up near the "real" stones as a joke. He revealed that he had a further stone, several times larger, which might make a suitable "recumbent" if he could find a way to move it into position between the other two! Give this man some time (and some serious lifting equipment) and we will have a brand new stone circle yet!
