The Lancaster Cross
The Lancaster Cross submitted by Sunny100 : Detailed illustration of The Lancaster Cross or 'The Hart and Hound Cross' in St Wilfrid's church. Dating from the 10th century, it is an Anglo/Norse cross shaft with the top section missing. A hart and a hound are depicted along with interlacing. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Lancashire

The Lancaster Cross at Halton near Lancaster. In the church of St Wilfrid, at the W end, there is a 10th century Anglo-Saxon/Norse cross-shaft. It was apparently found close to Lancaster and brought for safety to the church here. Alas, the cross-head is missing and the rest has seen restoration. However, the detail is quite spectacular.

On the front side a hart can be seen amongst the interlacing, while on the reverse, near the bottom, a hound sits entwined among even richer, and more delicate interlacing. The influence here is most definately Scandinavian, though much of the rest is Anglian. There are other cross fragments in the church, some bearing saints in panels, scrollwork and an archer shooting a bird.

In the churchyard stands the famous Sigurd Cross - now rather worn.
