The Lawley (Northern)
The Lawley (Northern) submitted by TheWhiteRider : Cross Ridge Dyke and ditch at SW end, bisected by original causeway and entrance. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Shropshire. A small, hour glass shaped univallate enclosure situated towards the Northern end of The Lawley.

The feature is made up of cross ridge dykes with ditches at the NE and SW ends and is supplemented by scarp banks and terraces cut in the SE and NW sides to enhance the already formidable natural slopes of The Lawley. The original entrance and causeway bisect the SW bank.

Another delightful spot, with excellent views. I spotted a Red Kite while exploring this feature, the first I've seen in Shropshire, which made my day.

I've read of a possible third earthwork on The Lawley, amongst the trees at the far North end. The area was so overgrown with bracken that nothing was visible and there is no reference to it on Archsearch so it remains a mystery for now.

According to Michael Raven in his excellent 'A Guide to Shropshire' Lawley comes from old English Lafa's-leah. Lafa is a personal name, most likely Saxon, and Leah can refer to a forest clearing, meadow or untilled land.
