Propped Stone in Cumbria

The term propped stone refers to large boulders that have been elevated, with one or small smaller rocks placed underneath. They may appear to be natural features - glacial erratics, outcomes of landslip, and so in - but in places where there is no natural process that can account for the feature.

This propped stone is located on an outcrop west of Holme in Cumbria and similar to the Keld Bank feature where a small block makes contact above and below on its edges only. Apparently raised in situ, with some 30cms displacement, the top stone is made of Great Scar Limestone and measures 55cms thick by 230cms wide and 90cms long. It has one prop and two points of contact. The raised end points to higher ground (the stone slopes downhill).

David Shepherd notes that the top stone is commensurate with the surrounding rock, and to a lesser degree on the sheltered rock. It is a prominent propped slab sited on a knoll, adjacent to large natural erratic and slab covering apparent rough cist-like feature. Its long axis is orientated E-W.

Thanks to David Shepherd for the information and grid reference. See Shepherd D. 2013. Propped stones: the modification of natural features and construction of place. Time and Mind. Vol 6 Issue 3 November 2013. pp 263-86. Bloomsbury.
