Clovenstone Hill
Clovenstone Hill submitted by MonumentMan : The designation of Clovenstone Hill by the OS mapping expeditions 1858/97 have put this boulder on the map! Other natural features were used in naming the nearby hills i.e. Crag Hill and Round Hills (Vote or comment on this photo)
A short distance southwest of Clovenstone Hill, on the Birbeck Fells above Bretherdale valley, lies the "Cloven Stone" which gives rise to the hills name. The Cloven Stone is a natural erratic boulder (~1.1m high x 1.8m wide) of Shap Pink granite which has come to rest on the native geology of this area.

The erratic is called the Cloven Stone because it is neatly cloven into three separate wedges, which once made up the whole boulder. This splitting is entirely natural and fault planes in the rock allowing this process are found on other Shap granite boulders nearby - although this stone is notable which is why the hill bears its name. The splitting must have occurred after the last glaciation which moved the erratic here - possibly during the periglacial frost action of the late glacial or Younger Dryas epoch.
