Windmill Hill (Earlestown) submitted by LivingRocks : Windmill Hill, a possible barrow situated on Newton Common near St Helens, Merseyside. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in Merseyside. The pedigree of this site is uncertain. It is suggested by English Heritage through www.pastscape.org that this is a chambered tomb or, alternatively, a post-mediaeval windmill mound.

I had a look on the ploughed field directly next to the mound in 2018, & found a very nice worked flint core, with two large flake removals showing bulb of percussion negatives.

These places have always been in Lancashire - not Merseyside. They are included in many many histories of Lancashire.

There is also the Roman Road which has been known about for a very very long time and actually underneath some of the Council House gardens in Newton area. yet these only a few years ago were claimed to have only been discovered by people from Liverpool University which was not the case.

We should all be proud of our heritage. and not allow people to claim it like that.

    Merseyside was historically in Lancashire.
This is just 1970s county boundary politics, & irrelevant. Nobody is claiming anything.

Both my wife and children decided to walk to this today (1st May 2005) on the way we asked a horse rider if we were going the right way.

He said yes but it would be difficult to get there.

1) The recent rain has turned the fields into bad sinking mud
2) The farmer has his crops growing in the field I need to cross to get to Windmill Hill
3) Difficult to walk to with family.

He recommend the best time to go September onwards as no crops will be planted, but it will still be difficult across the fields.

He did mention however to get a good luck take the Sankey walk to get a good view from the path.
