Hillfort in Shropshire

Ebury Hillfort is a small univallate hillfort atop Ebury Hill. The site, now partly wooded, is home to a tarmacced caravan site. Archsearch also refers to damage caused to the site by quarrying and by WWII military activity.

A footpath from Haughmond Hill passes along the SE and E part of the fort, but very little could be discerned on our visit. A pleasant spot for a caravan site, but it made it impossible to tell the difference between modern and prehistoric landscaping on this section of the site. The condition of other sections of the fort could not be established because of the lack of access and trees.

Re: Ebury Hillfort by Anonymous on Tuesday, 26 January 2010
I think that the name Ebury is related to other similar ones existing all over Europe. Evora chief city of Alentejo(once EBORA) in Portugal, Yverdon (once EBURODUNUM) in Switzerland, Eboli (once EBUR) in south Italy, Burio (once BURIA) near Costigliole Piemonte north Italy, Évora de Alcobaça in Portugal (once EBUROBRIGA), Avrolles in Burgundy France (once EBUROBRIGA), Embrun of the Hautes Alps in France (once EBURODUNUM ), Bram (once EBUROMAGUS) in Aquitania France, Evreux (once named EBUROVICI by Caesar) in Normandie France, York (once EBURACUM) in England, San Lucar de Barrameda near Cadiz (once AEBURA) in Spain, in Greece the name was changed into EFYRA for a Greek phonetic reason and was given to various cities one of them was Corinth. Some rivers had this name too, for instance HEBRUS in the ancient Thracia, HABUR a tributary of Euphrates in Iraq .
This name is also attested in Acta Sanctorum Hiberniae, Edimburgo 1*****, (ref. The Cambridge Medieval History, vol II) as owned by two bishops EBURIUS of St Brigid's time and EBORIUS from York who participated in the council of Arles of 314 aC.
As some of the localities cited above have dolmen or menhir (particularly dedicated to burial chambers as in Evreux, France) in their vicinity, I think that it was the name of an ancient divinity or hero of nomadic shepherds, linked to the cult of dead and divination.
This personage would disappear when Hercules took his role.
