St Ethelbert's Well (Hereford)
St Ethelbert's Well (Hereford) submitted by AngieLake : St Ethelbert's Well in Quay Street, Hereford. "In the wall of the house called St. Ethelbert is St. Ethelbert's Well, once famous for its alleged healing water. Ethelbert, King of East Anglia, was murdered by Offa, King of Mercia, in the 8th century. After miracles were attributed to Ethelbert's relics, he was canonised and became a patron saint of Hereford Cathedral." (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well / Spring in Hereford & Worcester
The site has virtually gone since it was piped into this fountain head. The spring cured ulcers and sores. Pins were offered here.

Apparently the spring arose when the body of the saint was rested here on its way to the catherdral to be interred.

A drinking fountain incorporates the late 14th head of a crowned king said to have come from the destroyed west front of the cathedral. The earliest reference to the well is in 1250, a further reference occurs in 1359. An elaborate canopy was constructed over the well at the beginning of the 14th century. It is also depicted on Speeds plan of Hereford.
