Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Herefordshire. In the church of St Deinst at Llangarron, 4 miles SW of Ross-On-Wye, can be found a fascinating stone slab built into the S wall of the nave. The slab stands on a small stone pedestal, and is nearly 3 feet tall. It was always referred to as 'The Chisom Child' - the thinking being that it covered the grave of a small child from the 13th or 14th century.
However, recently a historian/academic has suggested that the stone is Romano-British and commemorates a priest from that time. It could, in fact, be a carving of St Deinst (Deintyl) who is identified as being St Deiniol, first bishop of Bangor Fawr in N.Wales, in the 6th century.
The carved figure wears a clerical gown, knotted in the middle. His head and neck are quite large against the rest of the body, with arms folded and hands placed at either side. The figure slowly tapers in a downwards fashion with stubby footwear in a somewhat curious standing position. His hairstyle is typically Roman, as his is nose! Apparently the slab was cut down from a much larger piece of stone at some point in the distant past.
St Deinst or Deiniol was of the family of Coel Godebog, king of the North Britons (Strathclyde). He came to Wales in 525 AD and founded the monasteries of Bangor Fawr and Bangor-On-Dee. St David consecrated him Bishop of Bangor Fawr at the Synod of Brevi. He died in 584 AD and was buried on Bardsey Island. It is of interest here that a few miles away at Itton another church is dedicated to him.
