TheCaptain visited on 29th Aug 2011 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Walk several hundred metres west along the hilltop ridge from the Kings Weston Hillfort, past the large circular earthwork, across the roman road and its earthwork bank, and the open grassland of the hilltop now has several bushy clumps dotted around. Some of these clumps hide the remains of several bronze age burial mounds. The burial mounds are not in the best of condition, but are thought to date back to almost 2000BC. It is a very pleasant spot up on this hilltop, surrounded by the northwestern suburbs of Bristol, but you would hardly know it, and can easily get taken back in time while up here.

Not easy to research- hard copy easier than websites -

Pastscape mentions various sites near this Cemetary [City of Bristol:Kings Weston - not Gloucestershire or Somerset}

The Transactions of Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society mention four (now confirmed) Bronze Age Barrows in close proximity to this site - Vol76 1960 p99

However the specialist on the area was EK Tratman of the University of Bristol Spelaeological Society - their website is a nightmare - if you have access to a good Bristol or Gloucestershire Library then you will find Tratman's reports either contained in or referred to (in hard copy) in Vol 2(1) 1922/3 p77 and Vol 13(1) 1972 pp41-48 of their proceedings - they are worth the effort

The whole area is a little goldmine of ancient sites - but the (frequently inaccurate and out of date) Ancient Monuments site merely mentions the hillfort

A nice peaceful and quiet spot - the captain is correct - but now all our readers know about the site - still we should not be selfish!

    I dont think the addition of a few megalithic portal fans will make a lot of difference to the usual collection of occasional horseriders and dogwalkers found up here!
