Anne T visited on 29th Aug 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Hogback fragments, Bedrule Parish Church: (note for less mobile visitors, whilst access into the churchyard is on a tarmacked path, there are some steps up into the porch where these fragments are stored. Disabled access is signposted but the door was locked at the time of our visit). This parish church is in the tiny hamlet of Bedrule. We could see the church from the minor road, but had to go virtually through the village and turn south past a row of small cottages to reach the church. There was a small car park outside the churchyard gates. Rubens Law is to the south and dominates the view, which is rather nice. The western side of the churchyard is divided into a series of ’garden rooms’, each with a small collection of interesting, old grave slabs, some dating to the 1650s. The hogback fragments were inside the porch, along with a small stone with recumbent, robed figure. The fragments were underneath the small table with prayer and hymn books, so we moved the table out of the way (and replaced it), to photograph the fragments.

Bedrule Parish Church submitted by Anne T : A close up of the longer, almost rectangular hogback fragment, described as (2) in the Canmore record: "A fragment of a hog-backed tombstone measuring 1 ft. 3 1/2 in. in length by 7 in. thick, each side being 7 1/2 in. broad and showing three rows of shingle pattern." These two hogback fragments and a small sculptured stone can be found inside the porch of Bedrule Parish Church. This is a very pretty spot, with Rubers Law hillfort dominating the view to the south west.

The hogback fragments can be found underneath the small table holding prayer and hymn books, with the small sculptured stone against the side wall of the porch, to their left.

The NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies – now the Arts Society) notes from 2011/2013 tell us that these fragments suggest that Bedrule had a place of worship from the late 11th century, when Bedrule had a large castle, although nothing is known of the fabric of any church from that time.

This site is recorded as Canmore ID 55209, which gives details of the sculptured stone and the hogback fragments, together with information about some of the old tombstones in the churchyard. The present church, built in 1804 and rebuilt in 1877, is the resting place of many of the Turnbull clan and the Chisholm's. Some of the headstones date to the 17th century.

Bedrule Parish Church
Bedrule Parish Church submitted by Anne T : The Canmore record implies this is part of another hogback tombstone, saying: "A fragment of another hog-backed stone about 9 1/2 in. in length, 1 ft. 4 in. in greatest breadth and about 9 in. thick, each side being 9 1/2 in. broad. It appears to have borne four rows of shingle pattern." (Vote or comment on this photo)

Bedrule Parish Church
Bedrule Parish Church submitted by Anne T : The small sculptured stone stored in the porch of the church. Canmore tells us it measures 2ft in length by 6.5ins thick and a breadth of 9.5ins. On it is carved a figure clad in a robe with its head resting on a pillow and the hands folded together in prayer. (Vote or comment on this photo)
