Ancient Cross in Lancashire

The stump of this boundary cross, dated to probably the 13th century, is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1384526. HE tells us: "(the cross sites on a square plinth of 2 courses of large rectangular blocks (formerly secured by metal staples); and, loosely mounted diagonally on top of this, a large square cross-base with the stump of a chamfered shaft set in it. Attached to the front of the plinth is a lettered metal plaque relating the well-known legend that in 1323 Lady Mabel Bradshaigh (Bradshaw) did penance for bigamy by walking barefoot from Haigh Hall to this cross once a week for the rest of her life."

The cross is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 41800, which adds: "The cross is one of a group of four Medieval crosses which functioned as way markers along the medieval route from Wigan to Chorley".

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Mab’s Cross, Standishgate, Wigan, Lancashire, which includes a photograph, a description, local tradition and a list of reference sources for more information. The Journal adds that the tomb of Mabel and her husband, William de Bradshaw is located in All Saints Parish Church in Wallgate, Wigan, and tells us the monument was moved to its present location in 1922.
