Standing Stone (Menhir) in Guernsey

Menhir, almost 2m, slim, extremely well hidden. I have not found a historical reference for this one as yet.

It is over two years since I added this one, somewhat disappointed no-one appears to have tracked it down, This is a UNIQUE menhir on the island unlike any other. Slim, worked smooth, an enormous amount of effort must have gone into it.
It seems to be at the centre of the St Saviours Church/Le Crocq/Catioroc triangle, lovely setting but well hidden, I had to pull the ivy apart to find it first time. On left in the field entrance, the gate may be tied to it, really special. 1-7-20 This is bothering me, the stone looks "too good" to be Neolithic without a huge amount of rubbing with a harder rock to smooth it. In the introduction I mentioned that I had found no historical reference to it, I did find a reference to a pre-reformation calvary in the road. My expectation was that the calvary would be lower down the road where the "Chemaing i L'Eghise" in the St Savaeur's dialect, the Church Path crosses the Terre Norgiot. Many Croix's, crosses existed in megalithic areas on the island in pre-reformation times to "sanctify" the localities and provide fortitude to travelers through the areas in the dark. Some are thought to have been Christianised menhirs. All to my knowledge were destroyed during the Reformation, leaving nothing for comparison. The remains of a Cross were found about a 100 years back at Les Padins, site of another calvary, further up the road. Though from memory the workmanship on the photo looked better but that may have been simply easier stone to carve. I see three possible alternatives, firstly that it is a really unusual piece of early workmanship, secondly it is a chiseled medieval stone pole atop which the cross was mounted. The third that it is a menhir reworked in medieval times so as to allow the installation of the cross on top.
