Sites on Stronsay and Auskerry by Andy B on Tuesday, 08 November 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
Just to note that Canmore lists

3x Stone Settings
https://canmore.org.uk/site/search/result?SIMPLE_KEYWORD=stronsay&SITECOUNTRY=1&SITEDISCIPLINE=1&SITETYPE=1774

9x Standing Stones
https://canmore.org.uk/site/search/result?SIMPLE_KEYWORD=stronsay&SITECOUNTRY=1&SITEDISCIPLINE=1&SITETYPE=1769

19 Chambered Cairns
https://canmore.org.uk/site/search/result?SIMPLE_KEYWORD=stronsay&SITECOUNTRY=1&SITEDISCIPLINE=1&SITETYPE=1488

More than I can manage to list at the moment but more site submissions very welcome.

I have added several standing stones on the nearby island of Auskerry listed by Canmore to our interactive map, in the hope of enticing some people to visit:
https://www.megalithic.co.uk/le_megalith_map_os.html#8/59.032/-2.571

So much scope for exploration on these islands - I'll look forward to some more site entries as people are enticed to visit...

Video Talk: Links House, Stronsay: Finding the Mesolithic in Orkney by Andy B on Tuesday, 04 October 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
A Mesolithic Site at Links House, Stronsay. The discovery of flint tools dating to the Late Upper Palaeolithic/Early Mesolithic in 2007 which we reported at the time: https://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2146413293 - which led to excavation at Linkshouse and Mill Bay in 2008. This saw around 10,000 pieces of flint recovered as well as evidence of a very early prehistoric settlement.

Nothing to see on site so I've it linked to this page, it's about 2km south of this location.

Recording of a talk delivered by Dr Ben Elliot and Dan Lee of the UHI Archaeology Institute in Stronsay, Orkney, on September 13, 2022.
