In his book The Archaeology of the County of Somerset published in 1931, D.P.Dobson refers to a number of isolated stones in the Bristol area which may or may not represent the remains of chambered tombs. These include one in the gardens of a house in Armoury Square in the middle of the city itself.

According to Dobson this stone, located ‘in a cottage garden’ was mentioned in 1825 by Seyer in his Memoirs of Bristol who says that it originally had a companion across the road, and was much larger than at present.

As you sit at the traffic lights travelling west on Easton way, several large stones can be seen in a little fenced off and landscaped play area beside the busy road junction.

I often wonder to myself whether these are the remains of the ancient stones once meant to be round here, or just modern stones dumped here to form some sort of interest.

Maybe (just maybe) one day I'll manage to go have a better look.

These are modern stones. When I lived here in the 1960's the dual carriage way or the high rise flats did not exist and where the play area stands was terraced Victorian houses.
