Ancient Cross in Shropshire

A sandstone cross in the churchyard of Holy Trinity, not far from the porch. Possibly dated to post 1066, though maybe earlier. Enquiry with the tourist information centre, who telephoned a local historian on my behalf yielded uncertain information, as did a chance meeting with local author Vivien Bellamy, who wrote "A History of Much Wenlock".

An octagonal base, with what appears a lead lining in the socket for a well eroded shaft, several feet high.

Circa 680 AD St Milburga founded an Anglo-Saxon community here, and at this very location was the Nun's Church.

Surprisingly the guide leaflet, for sale in the church, makes no mention of the cross. All information specifically about the cross comes from the Shropshire Sites & Monuments record.
