Standing Stone (Menhir) in Cumbria

Stone marked on the OS Map.

More details see: Historic England List ID 1017733.

"The standing stone on Standingstone Rigg is well preserved and is a good example of its type. Its prominent location enhances its importance and will add to our understanding of the Bronze Age landscape in the region.

The monument includes a standing stone of prehistoric date, situated on the summit of a hill. Its prominent location commands extensive views in all directions, including south west to the Lake District and north to the southern uplands of Scotland. The standing stone is fashioned from a sandstone block which is oriented north to south. At its base the stone measures 0.42m by 0.32m and, narrowing to a point at the top, it stands to a maximum height of 1m."

Be aware that the monument is inside a "Danger Area".

Just to note that I've renamed this site slightly (adding in the 'Standing Stone (Cumbria)' to avoid confusion with the Standingstone Rigg site (previously thought to be a stone row) in Northumberland.

Some years ago, my husband and I tried to access this stone, and had been told if we applied to the senior officer at Spadeadam RAF station, we may get an accompanied visit. However, we were denied access, so I'd love to see actual photographs of this stone!
