Re: Mellor Brow Mound by Anonymous on Wednesday, 04 March 2020
Will check this out when the ground dries a bit but this looks very much like it may actually be the Roman signal post near the summit of Mellor Moor.

Do you have an accurate grid ref then?

What's that at NGR SD 65171 31073. Looks like a grassy mound, or is it a quarry hill, or something else.

Check your grid ref, that’s the middle of the village.
I think you’re looking at the feature at 655 312. I think this is probably the feature under discussion and yes, I think it is probably quarry waste.
Very sceptical about this ‘henge’. I haven’t been able to track down the reference and there are no other references to it at all.

Agreed, it's certainly not officially recognised.

Quarry mounds are sometimes mistaken for burial mounds and grassy earthworks. I have not been to look at it so I don't know any more than that, but maybe in future I, or someone, will go and have a look.

Have been up there regularly but can’t reconcile the pictures with the landscape (maybe there’s a lot more gorse now) but the directions given put it right in the middle of the old quarrying. If it were that obvious I’m surprised it wasn’t dug in the 1890s by the excavators or the Roman signal post.

Finally located this. SD651311. In the field behind Mellor war memorial.
Almost certainly a modern feature. Will check with local historians. My best guess is that this is a wartime feature associated with the defence of Salmesbury airfield, probably an AA gun position.

Re: Mellor Brow Mound by Anonymous on Friday, 05 June 2020
Like I said, I located it. The feature appears simply too ‘fresh’ to be ancient cf the Roman site on Mellor Moor. It also has modern pottery C19/C20 eroding out of the bank. Lidar seems to show it abutting the field boundary not extending under it so probably post dates this. An earthwork is shown on 1912 OS map, possibly a quarry spoil heap. A 1960 aerial photo shows significant disturbance.

I think LIDAR and OS link not centred on the earthwork, it's to the NE of Mellor, at the trig point:

Not

    Hi LS-Dave
The mound is due north from Mellor Chapels entrance.
The mound is a long walk away to the SW of the Trig point on Mellor Moor.
