Ancient Cross in Lancashire. Tocca's Stone at SD 658230 stands in the churchyard of St Stephen's church at Tockholes 2 miles NW of Darwen. It is difficult to find, but if you go down Chapels Lane and find St Stephen's it is located there. The Name Tockholes means 'Tocca's Hollow'.

This curious shaped stone stump is of Anglo Saxon origins, dating from the 8th century. It was probably a preaching cross, but this was broken off and lost, leaving just a stump and a round-shaped stone at it's side. The meaning of this is unknown. Beneath the stone stump is a more recent square-shaped stone with a long inscription - referring to a quarrel of sorts between two locals who carved the inscription.

Also in the churchyard is a rare outdoor pulpit, dating from the early 1900s, which was used for open-air services. This is said to be the only one of its kind in Britain. To the E of the churchyard, up the lane, a Medieval well with an inscription on it's arch. The well was said to have had healing properties.

The Journal of Antiquities features a page for this site - see their entry for Tocca’s Stone, Tockholes, Lancashire which includes photographs, directions for finding this stone, and local folklore. Strangely, there are no entries on Historic England or Pastscape for this stone or the well, but the Lancashire Past website includes more details in their entry for Tocca’s Stone, St Stephens Churchyard, Tockholes.

I have been informed that the churchyard of St Stephen's at Tockholes has been desecrated. A number of gravestones have been stolen by a gang posing as workmen. It looks as if the ancient Saxon cross, known as Tocca's Stone, has not been stolen or damaged.

It seems that nothing is sacred, not even the gravestones of peoples family relatives. These "cruel idiots" just want to make money out of the slabs of stone. Let us hope that these can be traced by the inscriptions carved upon them.
