Anne T visited on 15th Jul 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 St John The Baptist, Hope Bagot: We parked in the village hall car park, about the only place in the village we could leave the car, as the lanes here were so narrow. The church was very difficult to spot from the road, but thankfully, a sign in the village hall car park pointed us up some steps, through a gate and straight into the churchyard. What an unusual old church, very reminiscent of Escomb Saxon Church. Just as we entered the churchyard, we met the Church Warden's wife, who stopped to talk to us, and told us how to find the well (underneath a yew tree at the northern side of the churchyard (approaching the church from the north, there is a wooden gate into the churchyard; come through this gate and take the small path to your right hand side. This leads the 20m or so to the well). There is also a Victorian well head at SO 58858 74092. The Church Warden's wife told us there were a number of springs in the village.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by TimPrevett : The yew certainly adds a heavy ambience to the place. I found it a little creepy myself, but interestingly enough, it has many clouties - the most I've seen on a well outside of Cornwall. (Lots more not visible in this photo). Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Shropshire

A holy well a short way down from an ancient yew in Hope Bagot churchyard. Access is through the yew tree, or turning hard right on entering the lychgate. The well is defined by a small grotto, draped with ivy. The water emerges onto the lane right next to the tarmac. The church's car park is around the bend on the right. See also the Friends of Hope Bagot Church Website.

A number of springs rise in the village. A Victorian well head can also be found almost opposite this holy well at SO 58858 74092.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : The Victorian Well Head at SO 58876 74104. There is a plentiful supply of water coming from this well, running from the well head into a drainage ditch, running downhill, to presumably join with the water from the holy well some 20m to the south-west. St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by rogerkread : The well almost dry in 2022 - water could be heard running underground beside it, and the other well in the village was overflowing so no shortage of water in the vicinity at the time. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by rogerkread : The churchyard yew in a battered state on the 1st of July 2022. Large branches have fallen - signs suggested work by a tree surgeon will take place. Interestingly this yew is one of an avenue of yews lining the road beside the holy well, though the others are not so ancient as this one they are still of some age. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : First sight of this holy well, approaching it from the small path which runs inside the churchyard, but above the lane to the north of the church. But for the shouting men with loud strimmer's and hedge-cutters, this would have been a magical and peaceful place to sit awhile. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : Trying to get a glimpse into the well chamber itself, which is largely hidden beneath the earth. The sound of running water can be clearly heard, although only a small puddle of water can be seen in the corner of what used to be a small well pool.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : Trying to show the location of the holy well (towards the bottom right of the photo), with the roots of the ancient yew tree above. The yew tree is covered in necklaces, rags and other offerings, rather than being left at the well head.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : The well chamber and small well pool is well hidden by foliage, deep in the shade of the ancient yew tree above.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : Water from the holy well (deep in the shadows, marked by the red arrow) is piped into a modern concrete chamber below the well, next to the lane.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : The water from the holy well is piped into a concrete chamber next to the road, just below the well, then into this drain, then presumably piped under the road to the small stream which feeds the mill, which lies to the east.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot)
St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : There is a plentiful supply of water emerging from this spring, which is only some 20m from the holy well 'proper'. The water runs from the top of the well head, through a crack (eroded or man-made?) in the rock making up the well head. Similar to the Spoutwell in Corbridge.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by Anne T : The Victorian Wellhead at SO 58876 74104. The wooden gate in the distance (some 20-30m away) is the northern gate into the churchyard. Going through this gate, immediately turn right and this leads you to the holy well proper.

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by TimPrevett : The tree, the well, and the place where it emerges through a small opening onto the lane (in the muddy verge right next to the tarmac, bottom left).

St John the Baptist (Hope Bagot) submitted by TimPrevett : The well sits in a little grotto, draped with ivy, and beneath an ancient, brooding yew tree, dated to at least 1600 years old.
