Anne T visited on 8th Jul 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Turret 44b, Hadrian's Wall: Located on the crag above King Arthur's Well, this is a lovely spot. We had difficulty in locating the holy well, so whilst I continue to search for the it and see if I could find any structure or water course, Andrew ascended the steps to the top of the crag, and came back about 20 minutes later. This turret is on the Hadrian’s Wall path, which runs almost due east-west here. It is in a very pretty spot. Even with it being a Monday afternoon, and a very warm day, there were lots of walkers here. Many passed me on the paved section of path but none appeared to stop and look at the turret, as no-one seemed to linger at this point. Perhaps they had already seen too many turrets around here - there are certainly a lot of them!

This turret, on top of the eastern side of the Walltown Crags Gap, is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 1009938, which simply tells us: "(the) south face of Wall (is) exposed on either side of Turret 44B up to 1.6m high, otherwise a stony, turf-covered bank".

The turret is also scheduled as part of Historic England's List ID 1017535, which adds: "Turret 44b is situated at the east end of a crag overlooking the nick in which 'King Arthur's Well' is located. It survives as an exposed stone feature. The inner face of the turret stands to a maximum height of 1.9m. Excavations at the turret were carried out in 1892 by Gibson who found a coin from the reign of Valens … Along Walltown Crags the building of a ditch was unnecessary, except in the `nicks' or gaps which break up the crags. The section north of `King Arthur's Well' survives up to 2m deep with the glacis 0.7m high to the north".

Milecastle 44 is located about 700m to the east, along the top of the crag, at NY 6888 6694; Milecastle 45 is 450m to the west at NY 677 1665.

Parking is available at NY 67484 66184, where access land allows walking up to the Hadrian's Wall path at the top of crags just to the north; an easier route is to follow the metalled road east to the farmhouse, turning upslope at NY 68009 66514 (just past the drinking troughs on the northern side of the road), then follow the track up to NY 68030 66612, where there is a stile across the dry stone wall at NY 68047 66635. From here, a paved slab path with steps leads up to the top of the eastern side of the crags.

Hadrian's Wall (Turret 44b)
Hadrian's Wall (Turret 44b) submitted by Anne T : Hadrian's Wall path at Walltown Crags takes you over a stile over a dry stone wall, then leads you up a paved path, with a nice (but steep) flight of steps up to Turret 44b. The humps/banks you can see running from bottom to left alongside the beige-coloured footpath are the stone and earth remains of the wall. King Arthur's Holy Well is supposed to be located just to the right of the path at this... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hadrian's Wall (Turret 44b) submitted by Anne T : Turret 44b is at the top of the eastern crag of Walltown Crags. The red arrow marks its location. In the dip below, the remains of the wall continue east-west as a stony bank. The 'nick' above which the turret sits is home to King Arthur's holy well. Photo by Andrew T
